I want to root my HTC Legend but I don't want to lose my data on it. I have seen the unrevoked method for rooting HTC devices but it does not have a version specifically for HTC Legend. Would the HTC Wildfire version work or do I need to look elsewhere?
Justin Barbey and people from XDA Developers recently released a new and improved
HTC Super Tool, v2 if you will. But wait, what exactly is the HTC Super Tool v2?
The HTC Super Tool v2 is an all-in-one Windows-based utility which, in one button press, roots, unroots, does a bootloader unlock, performs an S-OFF, disables or enables the HTC Sense UI, unlocks networks, and applies the wireless tether exploit. All this and more in one tight and packed program. The HTC Super Tool v2 outperforms HTC's own bootloader unlocking tool, the latter being able to only unlock a couple of HTC devices. Even then, if you cannot locate your HTC phone in the following list, chances are high that the HTC Super Tool can do a bootloader unlock on it too. But if it really won't work, quoting from the guys at XDA, 'sorry maybe next update.' Official download link of the HTC Super Tool v2 Unlock Bootloader and Root below: Download HTC Super Tool v2 Before you do anything though, make sure that the HTC Windows Driver is installed. If it's not, the HTC Super Tool v2 won't work. HTC Windows Driver download link below: HTC Windows Driver for PC HTC Super Tool v2 Supported Devices HTC Evo Design 4G HTC Evo 4G HTC Evo 3D HTC Evo Shift HTC G2 HTC MT3Gs HTC MT4G HTC MT4Gs HTC Inspire HTC Sensation HTC Incredible HTC Wildfire S HTC Amaze Note: If you're a DIY person, always make it a point to back everything the hell up. Otherwise leave it to an experienced person or a professional. Note 2: Other DIY'ers are reporting that some of the options featured in this HTC Super Tool v2 aren't working. Htc Super ToolHow to Use HTC Super ToolInstructions: 1. Download and install the HTC Driver pack; 2. Download and extract the HTC Super Tool .rar file; 3. Enable USB Debugging on your HTC device by going to Settings, then Applications, then Development; 4. After making sure that your HTC device is connected, run the run.bat file you've extracted; 5. An option screen will come up and will prompt you for the desired action. Select an action by pressing the corresponding number; 6. Wait for the program to run its course and enjoy. Again, make sure you have a backup of what you're doing just in case a snafu comes up. Now that you know what the HTC Super Tool does—that is, unlock the bootloader and root or unroot—and how to use it, go ahead and try it, do it yourself. Gain some skills. Then again, you can just Facebook or Twitter this post and leave the unlocking to the pros. Thanks and credits to Justin Barbey at barbey.me and the XDA people for this release. 'Till my next installment. 2 AnswersWith rooting there is no guarantee that you won' lose your data, but in general it is safe. For rooting the HTC Legend it looks like the following is the best method:
Note: I don't have an HTC Legend and this is just a synthesis of research that I have done.

I finally worked out how to do this. I used Z4Root to gain root access and it worked perfectly. I was able to get the data I needed without any problems at all.
